Is mesh gear actually safe in a crash?
Quality mesh jackets are built around a structural mesh fabric (not basic fishnet) with CE-rated impact armor at shoulders, elbows, and back. They sacrifice abrasion resistance compared to leather, but a good mesh jacket with full armor is dramatically safer than a t-shirt and far more wearable than leather at 95°F.
What temperature is too hot to ride in leather?
Most riders find pure leather uncomfortable above 85°F unless it's perforated. Above 90°F, mesh, perforated leather, or hybrid textile jackets paired with a cooling vest or base layer are the safer comfort choice — overheating affects reaction time and judgment.
Do cooling vests really work?
Yes. Evaporative cooling vests soaked in water can drop your core temperature by 10–15°F for 2–4 hours, depending on humidity. They work best in dry climates and are a favorite of desert and long-distance summer riders.
What's the best summer helmet?
Look for helmets with active intake and exhaust vents, internal channels, and removable, washable liners. Full-face helmets with closable vents work year-round; modular and dual sport helmets often have the most airflow when you need it.
Can I wear my winter gloves in summer?
You can, but you'll be miserable and probably less precise on the controls. Dedicated perforated or mesh summer gloves let your hands breathe and grip better when they're not soaked in sweat — worth the second pair.
