Spies Inks Extension With Yamaha

American rider Ben Spies has signed a contract extension to stay with the factory Yamaha team for at least the 2012 season.

The MotoGP scene is expected to be quite different in 2012, with the competition switching to the larger 1000cc models. Spies, who is partnered with Jorge Lorenzo on the factory team, is now guaranteed to be on the Yamaha team as they make the switch to the bigger bikes.

"I am very happy to say that I will remain a part of the Yamaha family and that I will continue in the MotoGP series for 2012," said Spies. "This is a privileged time of my career riding for the most successful team in recent years at the very highest racing level."

The Texas native is coming off of his best win of the season at GP Catalunya, where he finished just behind his teammate Lorenzo in third place.

Spies was known as a Suzuki rider throughout his career in AMA racing, before he made the jump to MotoGP. The American rode with the Suzuki team for his first season in the competition before making the jump to Yamaha. Even then, he was on the Tech 3 team rather than the factory squad until last year, when the manufacturer announced he would be paired with Lorenzo on the factory YZF-R1s.
