Eli Tomac Dominates At Spring Creek To Claim First Career 450 Class Victory

The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, made its annual visit to the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" on Saturday with the La Crescent Wine & Spirit Spring Creek National from Spring Creek MX Park in Minnesota's Mississippi River Valley. While hometown riders were focal points on the afternoon, it was a rookie who stole the show in the 450 Class as GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac dominated en route to his first career win, sweeping each of the day's motos to become the fourth different winner in the division this season. In the 250 Class, Millville native Jeremy Martin put his Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha atop the podium for the fourth time this season, extending his points lead with a triumphant effort at the track owned and operated by his parents.

After taking his second overall win of the season one week ago, Red Bull KTM's Ryan Dungey looked for more of the same at his hometown track by capturing the MotoSport.com Holeshot Award in the first 450 Class moto. Dungey was closely followed by his Red Bull KTM teammate and main championship rival Ken Roczen, who soon put the pressure on Dungey and took over the top spot on the opening lap. The duo continued to race within mere bike lengths of one another before Roczen slowly started to pull away.

Tomac lurked in third behind the KTM duo and was on a mission to the front. Following a crash by Dungey on Lap 3, Tomac assumed control of second and set his sights on Roczen. Tomac methodically closed down the gap to the German out front and before long it became a head-to-head showdown between the pair of 450 Class rookies, who also were championship rivals one year ago in the 250 Class. The duo went bar-to-bar for multiple laps, trading positions and using every inch of the Millville track before Tomac made the pass stick on Lap 12. Once in control of the moto, the Honda rider checked out and took his first checkered flag in the premier division by over 16 seconds. Roczen finished second, with Dungey third. Team Honda Muscle Milk's Trey Canard followed in fourth, with Toyota/Yamaha/N-FAB/JGRMX's Josh Grant rounding out the top five.

Tomac, who missed the first four rounds and eight motos of the season with an injury, carried the momentum into the second moto by securing the MotoSport.com Holeshot Award ahead of Dungey while Roczen battled from a start deep inside the top 10. However, a malfunction with the starting gate was deemed to have resulted in a disadvantage for some riders and brought out the red flag to signify a restart.

As the gate dropped for the second time, Tomac once again emerged at the front, claiming the MotoSport.com Holeshot Award again but losing the lead briefly to Toyota/Yamaha/N-FAB/JGRMX's Justin Brayton. The Yamaha rider's time out front was short lived, as Tomac reclaimed the position with Dungey soon following suit to take over second. Behind this trio, Canard and Roczen were also making their respective charges to the front and both riders also made their way around Brayton to establish a four-rider breakaway out front.

Tomac and Dungey gradually extended their advantage over Roczen in third to make it a two-rider battle for the moto win. As Dungey looked to pressure Tomac for the lead, Roczen fell into the clutches of Canard and dropped off the podium into fourth. Out front, Tomac fended off the pressure from Dungey, who then fell late in the moto after making contact with a lapped rider. Tomac easily took his second career moto win to also earn his first career 1-1 sweep in the 450 Class and become the division's 62nd different winner all time.

"Today was a tough one the way the track was," said Tomac, who has finished on the overall podium in each of his four career starts. "Going into the second moto I knew I had to get out there and get a good start. We ended up getting the holeshot then the red flag came out and I thought to myself 'is this really happening?' Luckily enough I got another one. Brayton was right there, but after that I was just hitting my marks and I felt really comfortable."

Dungey's runner-up effort (3-2) was his 50th podium finish in 56 starts during an illustrious 450 Class career, moving him into fourth all time. Roczen finished third (2-4), but gave up two points to Dungey in the championship standings and failed to earn a moto podium for the first time this season. Canard was fourth (4-3), with Grant fifth (5-5). Team Yoshimura's James Stewart, who won earlier this season at High Point, did not start the final moto with team officials citing an apparent illness.

"I put in a solid run in the first half [of the second moto], but then bogged down a bit," said Roczen. "We'll go back, figure it out and come back better for the next race."

Roczen's lead over Dungey in the 450 Class standings now sits at 24 points. Canard sits third, 65 points behind. Tomac's victory vaulted him into the top 10 in the 450 Class standings, currently sitting ninth.

In the 250 Class, Valli Motorsports Yamaha's Christophe Pourcel took advantage of posting the fastest lap of practice by translating his first starting selection into the MotoSport.com Holeshot Award over GEICO Honda's Justin Bogle and Martin. It didn't take long for Martin to begin his pursuit of the lead, passing Bogle on the opening lap and instantly putting pressure on Pourcel for the lead. Martin took advantage of a slight bobble to slip past Pourcel and consistently opened up his advantage from there on out.

With the moto well within Martin's control, the focus turned to the battles behind him as Pourcel was forced to deal with his hard-charging fellow Frenchman Marvin Musquin aboard his Red Bull KTM. Musquin had already engaged in a lengthy battle with Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Dean Wilson for third, but saved enough energy to make the late pass on Pourcel for second. Martin took his first moto win at his hometown track over 10 seconds ahead of Musquin, while Pourcel held on for third. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Blake Baggett overcame an 18th-place start to finish fourth, with his teammate Wilson following in fifth.

Pourcel put his Yamaha at the front of the field to start the final moto, once again securing the Motosport.com Holeshot Award, with Cycle Trader/Rock River Yamaha's Alex Martin looking for hometown success of his own in second and Baggett in third, just ahead of Bogle. Pourcel controlled the early stages of the moto while Baggett passed Martin for second and began his pursuit of the Frenchman out front. On Lap 3, Baggett made an easy pass on Pourcel for first. He quickly pulled away and appeared to have the moto in hand. However, on Lap 4 Baggett crashed out of the lead a fell outside the top 10, handing the battle for the lead to Bogle and Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha's Cooper Webb. This pair went fender-to-fender for multiple laps before Webb was able to make the pass stick and seize control of the moto.

Behind the leaders, Jeremy Martin overcame a sixth-place start to move into third and was able to make the pass on Bogle for second just a few laps later. Despite his best efforts, Martin couldn't close the gap on his teammate out front and Webb went on to earn his third career moto win by over three seconds. Martin's runner-up result was enough to secure his class-leading fourth overall victory of the season and a breakthrough win at his home track. Rockstar Energy Racing's Jason Anderson rounded out the moto podium in third.

"I just made a few mistakes there off the start [in the second moto]," explained Martin. "Cooper [Webb] was behind me [initially] but I got stuck behind a rider and kept hearing him behind me. He got around me and rode really well. I tried to put on a charge for the hometown crowd and make things exciting, but I just came up short [of the moto sweep]. I'm having fun and I'm looking forward to next weekend."

Following eventual DNF's by both Baggett and Bogle in the final moto, Musquin moved into second overall on the afternoon (2-4) while Webb's second moto win vaulted him into third overall (9-1). Pourcel finished fourth (3-6) with Wilson in fifth (5-5), while Baggett and Bogle's misfortunes dropped them to 13th (4-33) and 15th (6-32) overall, respectively.

Martin jumped to a 43-point lead in the 250 Class standings over Webb, who moved into second. Baggett fell to third, 56 points behind Martin.

The 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship continues next weekend with the ninth round of the 2014 season and the Motosport.com Washougal National. Washougal MX Park in Washougal, Washington, will host the world's best riders on Saturday, July 26. The first moto of the day begins at 4 p.m. ET.

Ryan Dungey And Ken Roczen On The Podium At Spring Creek National

Red Bull KTM Factory riders Ryan Dungey and Ken Roczen earned 2nd and 3rd overall at the eighth round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series held at Spring Creek MX Park to remain in the top two positions in the championship point standings.

The teammates earned the top two fastest times in the morning qualifying sessions to earn the first two gate picks for the opening moto. Their choices paid off and the two teammates started first and second in the first moto with Ryan Dungey grabbing the holeshot. Ken Roczen quickly moved around his teammate as well as Eli Tomac who began an epic battle for the lead.

Roczen and Tomac reenacted a battle similar to those they shared last year in the 250MX class. With the crowd lining the fences to cheer on the battle the two swapped positions multiple times and had a great time racing for the number one position. With five minutes to go, Tomac began to pull Roczen and went on to take the win. Roczen held on for 2nd place while Dungey finished 3rd.

"It was great to battle with Eli (Tomac) again," stated Roczen. "I wish I had a little more for him at the end of the moto but I am happy to be on the podium."

In the second moto, both KTM riders earned good starts on their KTM 450 SX-F machines once again and found themselves up front early. This time it was Dungey who battled with Tomac for the top spot almost closing on his rear wheel near the halfway point. Tomac eventually took the win while Dungey finished 2nd and Roczen crossed the line in 4th. Dungey's 3-2 moto finishes earned him 2nd overall while Roczen's 2-4 results placed him 3rd overall for the day.

"I'm glad to land on the podium at my hometown race," stated Dungey after the second moto. "I felt really good today and am glad to be battling upfront."

Yamaha Makes Strong Showing At Spring Creek

Round eight of the 2014 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Series was held at Spring Creek Motocross Park in Millville, Minn. MAVTV aired the first moto live, and the second moto was broadcast on the NBC Sports Network.

Phil Nicoletti was not scheduled to race in Millville. He will race the upcoming event in New Berlin, N.Y. on Aug. 9. Justin Brayton began the first moto in the top-five, with Josh Grant inside the top-10. At the conclusion of the opening lap Grant was sixth and Brayton seventh. Grant rode a steady race finishing fifth, Brayton was 10th.

In the second moto Brayton rounded turn one in second, and then passed for the lead. He led about half a lap before being shuffled back to third. Grant was ninth after the first lap. Brayton briefly ran off the track and became tangled in some trackside banners on lap six relegating him to 18th. At the checkers Grant was consistent earning fifth again, while Brayton was able to ride back to 15th. Grant's five - five scores gave him fifth overall, and Brayton's 10 - 15 finishes were good for 11th on the day.

Washougal MX Park in Washougal, Wash. will host round 10 of the series on July 26. MAVTV will broadcast the first moto live at 4:00 p.m. (EST), and the NBC Sports Network will air the second moto at 6:00 p.m. (EST). The first moto will also stream live on promotocross.com.

Teammates Jeremy Martin and Cooper Webb swept the AMA 250MX class with a moto win apiece at Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, Minn. on Saturday, July 19. It was a magical day for Martin at his home track as he flew his Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha YZ250F to 1-2 moto finishes for his fourth overall win of the season. Meanwhile Star Racing/Yamaha's Webb scored his third career pro moto win on his way to an overall podium with 9-1 finishes. Martin's overall boosted his championship lead to 43 points over Webb, who reclaimed second place as rival Blake Baggett faltered. Likewise, the new YZ250F captured four of the top-eight overall positions, with Valli/Yamaha's Christophe Pourcel in fourth with 3-6 moto finishes and Cycletrader.com/Rock River/Yamaha's Alex Martin in eighth with 12-7 finishes.

Pourcel was the quickest qualifier for the seventh time out of eight races this season, once again over Jeremy Martin. The French rider also led the first moto for one lap before being passed by Martin, who then commanded all remaining laps to take the win. Admirably, Pourcel held onto second for the duration of the moto until losing the spot to Marvin Musquin just three laps from the finish. Webb was also on the gas, starting outside the top 10 and then advancing toward the front until clipping the rear of competitor Justin Bogle's bike while attempting a pass on lap four. Despite the resulting fall, Webb was able to remount and then charged from inside the top 20 to finish ninth and add some crucial points to his own championship bid.

Once again backing up his qualifying pace, Pourcel pulled the holeshot in the second moto, with Martin starting outside the top five and Webb just inside the top 10. As Pourcel led the first three laps, Martin and Webb were tearing toward the front of the pack. While Martin went from seventh to third in just four laps, amazingly Webb vaulted from eighth to second in the same period, passing both his teammate and Pourcel in the process. Webb then took over the lead from Justin Bogle on lap seven and raced ahead to the win, with fellow bLU cRU riders Pourcel ultimately finishing sixth, Alex Martin seventh and Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha's Anthony Rodriguez in 10th, making it five YZ250Fs from three different teams in the top 10. Title rival Baggett ultimately withdrew with mechanical problems, helping Webb retake second place in the points.

"After the first-moto crash, I went back to the trailer and thought, 'Should we just settle for third in the points or fight?'" Webb said. "I'm a fighter so I chose to come out and try my hardest. I wanted it, I'm not going to lie!" Yamaha motocross team manager Jim Perry added, "It was a great points day for the Star Racing team, and a great results day for Yamaha with a 1-3 overall finish on the day."

Marvin Musquin Finishes Second Overall At Spring Creek National

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Marvin Musquin finished 2nd overall in the 250MX class at the eighth round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series held at Spring Creek MX Park.

Marvin Musquin got out to a top ten start in the first moto and was sitting in 5th place by the second lap. He passed Justin Bogle on the next lap to take over 4th position and soon after began a battle with Dean Wilson for a podium spot. The two riders' swapped positions a few times with Musquin making the pass stick around the halfway point. Once Musquin moved into 3rd he began to pull away and close the gap on the 2nd place ride. He eventually caught Christophe Pourcel with three laps remaining and made a pass for the position through the sand whoops. Musquin crossed the finish moments later to take 2nd for the moto.

In moto two, Musquin earned a 7th place start off the line. On his KTM 250 SX-F he remained in 7th or the first few laps before breaking into the top five. By the sixth lap he had moved into 4th place. He remained in that position through the end of the race just shy of another podium position. His 2-4 results earned him 2nd overall for the day and helped him move his position forward in the championship standings.

"I'm very excited to land on the podium again," stated Musquin. "The track was really fun today and I am also glad to be back in the top five in the overall point standings."

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Dean Wilson Breaks Into The Top Five At Spring Creek

Tucked in the countryside of Minnesota, the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship roared through the land of 10,000 lakes as Round 8 took place Saturday at Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, Minnesota. Leading the charge was Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Dean Wilson as he used speed and consistency to finish a season best of fifth overall. His teammate Blake Baggett finished just ahead of him in the first moto to place fourth, but misfortune in the second moto left him with 13th overall. In the 450 class, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Brett Metcalfe stayed consistent as well to finish sixth overall while Jake Weimer attempted to return to action, but after pushing through pain to finish 18th, he sat out the second moto and will take more time to recover.

Baby Steps
The 2011 250 Class Motocross Champion continued to strive towards his old championship form in Millville and showed signs that he will return to the podium shortly. In the first moto, Wilson rocketed down the long Spring Creek start on his KX250F and was pushed wide but railed the corner and battled up front. Making quick passes early, he battled in a podium position for the first half of the moto but succumbed to a couple late race mistakes and finished fifth. The Scotsman did not get as good of a start in the second moto but worked his way forward and by the halfway point he had caught the top-five. He continued to slowly reel in those in front of him, but he crossed the line in fifth place as the checkered flag flew. His 5-5 score gave him fifth overall and in his best finish in three years.

"Today was a step forward," said Wilson. "I still don't feel quite myself and where I want to be but every week we're closer. I want to be up front battling for wins and I'm confident I will be there before the season's end."

Holding Position
Metcalfe started up front in the first moto and latched on to the leaders. He pushed forward and started closing the gap to the leaders but late in the moto began to battle for fifth and ultimately finished sixth. In the second moto, Metty had to work his way forward from outside the top 10. He looked for different lines and made aggressive passes to climb up to sixth and pressure for a top-five finish. His 6-6 moto score gave him sixth overall and in doing so, made up some valuable points in the championship standings and now sits only four points behind fourth place with four rounds remaining.

"I felt good that first moto," said Metcalfe. "But that track is brutal. It isn't much fun beating through those sand whoops each lap. I'm happy we put together two solid motos today and will keep the ball rolling into next weekend."

Heartbreak
Baggett came into Millville with confidence after winning one week prior. He had to make his way through the field in the first moto after he got the green flag in 18th position. The 2012 250 Class Motocross Champ passed riders like they were trail riding and made his way to a fourth place finish, just off the podium. He made up for the poor start in Moto 1 and rounded the first turn at the front of the field in Moto 2. He made a few quick moves and took the lead on Lap 3, but one lap later he found himself on the ground. Remounting, he climbed his way back into the top-10 but something was not right with his motorcycle and he was forced to retire from the race.

"It's a real bummer," said Baggett. "I had the lead and should have checked out. I made a mistake and went down and as soon as I got going I knew something wasn't right. I pushed it for a few laps until the bike could not go on. This championship is not over and we're still going to fight to the end."

Getting Back Up to Speed
Weimer made his return after missing three rounds, but unfortunately it was short lived. He went out for first practice and set lap times within the top-10 as he had each week prior to injury, but as the track got rougher it was evident his back was not quite up to take the beating. He raced the entire first moto, but struggled with strength in his back and could only muster 18th place. It was decided to sit out the second moto and take more time to heal his nagging injury. Weimer plans to return following the break in two weeks time, giving him three full weeks before Unadilla. Hill surrendered to injury as well in the first moto where he pulled off around the 20-minute mark after aggravating his forearm, which he injured in Tennessee.

Whoop Monster
The notorious Millville whoops consist of two long straights of rolling sand whoops that can make or break a rider's lap time. As always, momentum is important and one of the best at maintaining his momentum entering the whoops was Wilson. His tall stature gives him the advantage to manual each whoop, trying to keep power to the ground. In the first moto, Wilson was carrying so much speed through them that he was catching riders too quick and actually made contact that nearly put him on the ground.

"I looked forward to that section every lap because I knew I could make up some time," said Wilson. "Although I came through the first straight in the first moto and almost ran into the back of the next rider as we entered the turn. They are always gnarly and I had a few huge saves coming through as well!"

Pacific Northwest
The deep loamy terrafirma of Eastern tracks will be left behind as the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship heads to the Pacific Northwest for the picturesque Washougal National. Amongst the pine trees, Washougal, Washington's course features a much more hard-packed soil that winds through the forest. After two less than ideal weekends the Oregon native, Hill will look to shine at the track he grew up racing.

Troy Lee Designs Dives Into Spring Creek Motocross

As the Lucas Oil National Motocross Series rolled into Millville, MN, last weekend, the Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / MAVTV / Honda team was excited to welcome back Shane McElrath. Shane had been healing a sore back from the beginning of the season and was finally ready to race. Unfortunately, Malcolm Stewart is suffering from dehydration and was not up to the task of competing in the 450 division in Minnesota. With Stewart home recuperating, the TLD crew would focus intently on the 250 class.

The opening moto found TLD / MAVTV rider Shane McElrath inside the top ten and looking good. But all of that time on the couch healing up caught up with him and he dropped back to 17th in his first moto back. He explained that he just tightened up under the intensity of the race. His second moto didn't provide the same good start but he would hover around 15th position for the entire moto and eventually finish 16th for 17th overall.

TLD / Lucas Oil rider Cole Seely rode well in the opening moto, coming from a 15th place start to 7th at the finish. Cole showed that he has the speed and the fitness to be at the front by moving forward the entire race. In the second moto, Cole was circulating around 10th in the opening laps but a crash would send him to the back of the pack. Seely once again moved towards the front but could only get to 14th before the checkered flag dropped, securing 9th overall on the day.

Jessy Nelson had a difficult first moto. He didn't get the best of starts and just couldn't get into a rhythm. He logged a 14th in the opening moto but was determined to have a better showing the next time out. While he didn't get the holeshot he was hoping for, Jessy did ride much better the second time around and he advanced all the way to 8th position, giving himself a top ten finish in Millville with a 10th overall.

James Stewart Aims To Be Fit At Washougal MX

Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing's James Stewart suffered more bad-luck at the eighth round of the 2014 AMA Pro Motocross Championships in Millville on Saturday, but hopes to turn things around next weekend.

Stewart had been looking forward to the Spring Creek National - having picked-up the overall victory there last year - and, at first, things were going well and the opening moto saw him get a good start on his Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450. Then, while running fourth on the first lap, he suffered a get-off, but remounted to finish seventh.

In the second moto, Stewart lined-up on the gate and took another good start but wasn't feeling 100%. Because of a gate malfunction, the race was red-flagged early and the riders lined-up again. At this point, Stewart said he felt disoriented and dizzy, and retired for the day.

Said Yoshimura Suzuki Team Manager Mike Webb: "Obviously we're disappointed, but more than that, we're concerned about James. We're not really sure what's going on or whether he's suffered health issues that we were all unaware of at the previous rounds. One thing is for certain, it's been a tough few weeks for James and that's taken a toll on him and the team. Right now, we're going to get James checked-out by a physician and play the next few days by ear. His health is our number-one priority."

Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing's next race is round nine of the 2014 AMA Pro Motocross Championships on July 26th at the Washougal National.
