The Red Bull Tennessee National, Round 5 of the Lucas Oil Pro
Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, produced a
wild afternoon of competition on Saturday from one of the newest
tracks in the series at Muddy Creek Raceway. Needing a win in the
final 450 Class moto, Red Bull KTM's Ken Roczen did
just that to ensure his third overall win in just five career
starts in the premier division. In the 250 Class, Yamalube/Star
Racing Yamaha's Cooper Webb
broke through for his first career win to become the 75th different
winner in the history of the division.
GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac made
his anticipated 450 Class debut at Muddy Creek following a lengthy
recovery from a broken collarbone. Last year's 250 Class title
winner made his presence felt immediately by setting the fastest
lap of practice, and then carried that momentum into the opening
moto by grabbing the Motosport.com Holeshot Award. As Tomac and
Roczen positioned themselves out front, a huge first turn pileup
included most recent winner James
Stewart and his Team Yoshimura Suzuki in addition to Discount
Tire Racing/TwoTwo Motorsports' Chad Reed, and
Toyota/Yamaha/N-Fab/JGRMX's Josh Grant.
Roczen made a pass on Tomac for the lead on the opening lap only to
go down the next time around and fall to fourth. Tomac seized the
opportunity to lead his first ever 450 Class moto, impressively
holding off Team Honda Muscle Milk's Trey Canard
and a hard-charging Ryan Dungey
for over half the race. Dungey made his way by Canard and set his
sights on Tomac out front, closing in lap-by-lap and eventually
making the pass on Lap 9. Roczen rebounded from his early trouble
to follow Dungey past Tomac and into second, pitting the teammates
in a battle for the win. Dungey maintained his advantage throughout
the remainder of the race to take the moto win, his first since the
opening round, while Roczen followed in second. Tomac finished
third with Canard fourth, while Stewart passed nearly the entire
field to finish fifth.

Knowing he needed a good start in order to have a shot at his
second overall win of the season, Dungey raced to the Motosport.com
Holeshot Award in Moto 2, only to be passed by Roczen on the
opening lap. The KTM riders proceeded to consistently pull away
from the field from that point on, meaning the win would be decided
between the teammates. Tomac slotted into third off the start and
maintained control of the podium spot despite pressure from Canard.
Out front, Dungey closed in on Roczen as they approached lappers in
the late stages of the race but was unable to mount a serious
challenge, which allowed Roczen to steal the overall win. Tomac
followed in third.
Both Dungey and Roczen finished the afternoon with identical moto
results, but Roczen's better second moto finish gave him the edge
in the tiebreaker.
"I felt good out there. I got a good start [in the second moto] and
even had a close call out there with about two laps to go which
caused me to lose a bit a time, but I still made it happen," said
Roczen, who has finished third or better in every moto this season.
"I'm happy it's over. It was another good weekend and we were able
to keep the points lead steady."
"All in all it was a good day," said Dungey. "I pushed it that
whole second moto. I tried [to close in on Roczen] and got
fortunate with the lappers coming in there, but then they came my
way and it kind of averaged out. We gave it all we had and that was
all I can do."

It marked the third time this season that the KTM duo has finished
1-2 overall. Tomac's pair of solid third-place finishes guaranteed
a spot on overall podium in his 450 Class debut, with Canard fourth
(4-4) and BTO Sports KTM's Andrew Short
fifth (6-8). Stewart endured even more misfortune in the second
moto to soldier home with an 11th-place finish and land eighth
overall (5-11), one round after his dominant win.
With no points being exchanged between Roczen and Dungey, 16
markers still separate the pair at the top of the championship
standings. Stewart's challenging day dropped him to 43 points out
of the lead in third, with just one point separating him and Canard
in fourth.
Coming into Muddy Creek, every moto win and overall victory in the
250 Class was split between two riders - Yamalube/Star Racing
Yamaha's Jeremy
Martin and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Blake
Baggett. The former series champion Baggett entered the day
with back-to-back wins at the previous two rounds, while Martin
controlled the championship points lead.

As the gate dropped on the first moto, Frenchman Christophe
Pourcel put his Valli Motorsports Yamaha out front for the
Motosport.com Holeshot Award, with Monster Energy/Pro
Circuit/Kawasaki's Justin Hill
hot on his rear fender. Behind them, Martin found himself on the
ground in the first corner following a multi-rider incident and
started at the rear of the field.
As Pourcel and Hill did battle out front, GEICO Honda's Justin Bogle
and Webb closed in. Both Bogle and Webb moved past Hill before Webb
then took over second place from Bogle just a couple laps later.
Baggett started inside the top five and also began a surge to the
front, and before long it became a three-rider battle for the lead
between Pourcel, Webb and Baggett. On Lap 11 Webb took control of
the moto from Pourcel and brought Baggett with him. The pair pulled
away in the closing laps, which allowed Baggett to make a desperate
move in the final corner and somehow pass Webb on the outside to
edge him out at the line by .080 seconds. Pourcel finished third,
with Bogle fourth and Red Bull KTM's Marvin
Musquin fifth. Martin fought his way through the field to
finish 10th.
With a four moto winning streak in his favor, Baggett sought to
claim three-straight overall victories for the first time in his
career but had to overcome a slew of riders at the start of the
second moto. Bogle earned the Motosport.com Holeshot Award but was
pushed by Pourcel and Webb early, with each rider making the pass
to set the tone out front. Webb wasted little time in putting
himself in control, passing Pourcel for the lead before the
conclusion of the opening lap.

Once out front, Webb was able to maintain his advantage even though
Baggett made his way from another top five start to come within
bike lengths of Webb with just a handful of laps remaining. After
several pass attempts, Baggett made a slight bobble that opened
some space between he and Webb. Shortly thereafter, Baggett made
contact with a lapped rider that forced him to the ground, allowing
Bogle to assume second and causing Pourcel to crash as well. Webb
raced on knowing the win was his and capped off a career day by
winning his first career moto and securing his first overall
victory in the process. Bogle finished second with Baggett coming
back to finish third.
"I'm on cloud nine, I'm not going to lie. I was beating myself up
when I got passed in the last turn [in Moto 1], but I was able to
come back and get the job done," said Webb, who hails from North
Carolina and considers Muddy Creek to be his home race. "To do this
at my home race, I could hear these guys [the fans] every single
lap. Baggett was on me the whole moto, but I told myself I wasn't
going to let him by. I'm so pumped."
Webb had earned five runner-up finishes in nine motos prior to the
win, including two second place overall finishes. Baggett's 1-3
results placed him second overall, while Bogle's runner-up finish
in the second moto helped move him to third overall (4-2). Pourcel
was fourth (3-4) while Musquin rounded out the top five (5-5).

Martin was never a factor in either moto after difficult starts and
ultimately finished a season-worst seventh overall after posting
10-6 moto scores. Despite that, he still sits atop the 250 Class
standings albeit by just eight points over his teammate Webb.
Baggett closed in to within 17 points of the lead in third.
"The only thing I'm concerned about is getting a good week of
practice and coming out strong at RedBud," said Martin, who also
earned his first career win earlier this season. "I rode as hard as
I could today and gave it everything I had, so I can walk away
knowing I did everything I could. We'll just come back
stronger."
The 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will reach the
halfway point next weekend with its annual 4th of July tradition at
the Red Bull RedBud National. RedBud MX in Buchanan, Michigan, will
host the sixth round of the season on Saturday, July 5. Action
begins at 1 p.m. ET.

Ken Roczen And Ryan Dungey Finish 1-2 At Muddy Creek National In Tennessee

Red Bull KTM Factory riders Ken Roczen and
Ryan Dungey
each took a moto win at the Muddy Creek National to finish 1st and
2nd overall for the day at the fifth round of the Lucas Oil Pro
Motocross Championship Series.
Both Ken Roczen and Ryan Dungey earned good starts out of the gate
in moto one. Roczen passed into the lead on the second lap but
crashed half a lap later and dropped to 4th place. His crash
allowed Eli Tomac, Trey Canard and Dungey to go by. He quickly
recovered and caught on to the rear wheel of Dungey and the two
teammates began to pressure the top two riders. On their KTM 450 SX-Fs they quickly
moved to the front of the pack and began to pull away from the rest
of the field.
Dungey and Roczen stayed close to each other through the entirety
of the race until Roczen suffered another tip over with three laps
to go. He returned to the track without losing a position but did
not close back on his teammate. Dungey went on to take the moto win
with Roczen finishing approximately 10 seconds back in the
runner-up position.

Cudby[/caption]
In moto two, Dungey leaped out to another great start earning the
holeshot. Roczen was immediately behind him and made the pass for
the lead in the opening lap. Dungey did not let Roczen out of his
sight and the two riders pulled to a massive lead out front as they
battled each other for the win. Near the end of the moto lappers
became a problem for both riders and allowed the gap between them
to close. When the checkered flag flew, it was Roczen who claimed
the second moto win followed by Dungey. The KTM riders were an
impressive full minute ahead of the 3rd place finisher.
"I think having Ryan (Dungey) push me the whole moto today helped
us both stretch our lead out front", remarked Roczen of their
impressive lead on the field. "We have both been training hard and
it is showing on the track."
Roczen's 2-1 scores earned him the overall victory for the day
while Dungey's 1-2 motos placed him 2nd overall. The two riders
still maintain the top two positions in the overall point
standings.
After the race, Dungey commented: "I've been able to train in the
hot weather lately and that really paid off for me today. The bike
felt great and I got off to good starts both motos. The lappers
definitely made a difference in the second moto but I am glad to
run up front with my teammate and to see both Red Bull KTM bikes on
the top of the box."

Cudby[/caption]
After missing the first four races of the motocross season, GEICO
Honda rider Eli Tomac came
back in style, snatching third-place finishes in both 450 motos
during the Tennessee National at Muddy Creek Raceway.
"It was a great start for me in my return to the motocross
circuit," Tomac said. "We started off the day well with a
first-place qualifying effort, which gave me a good spot on the
start. In fact, I got the holeshot in the first moto and led for
about 15 minutes but got passed by the two KTM riders at the
end.
"I had another solid start in the second moto and ended up in the
top five at the start. I worked my way up to third and was a little
bit closer to the KTM guys than I was in the first moto. That team
just had a super-strong race. I did what I could in both motos, but
I honestly couldn't ask for more in my first race back."
[caption id="attachment_32585" align="alignleft"
width="300"] Justin Bogle - Photo: Simon
Cudby[/caption]
Teammate Justin Bogle
was looking to rebound after his last 250 race didn't go as well.
He secured a third-place overall finish in Blountville after
capturing a solid fourth in the first moto and a second-place
finish in the second moto.
"I had a tough week at home, so I came into this event not in the
best position," Bogle said. "To get up on the podium this week was
a good step in the right direction but I'm still hungry for more.
The next goal is definitely getting a moto win and going from
there. We're making progress and getting closer."
Bogle, the 2014 250SX East champion, knows that in order to
continue his quest to capture a moto win and eventually the
championship he needs to remain as healthy as possible.
"I'm feeling better and fitness is good," Bogle said. "That's my
strong point right now I think. Today was one of the most humid
races we will have this season. The heat is not an issue; it's the
humidity. If we could make it through the intense humidity we had
today, we should be pretty good for the rest of the season. I
definitely felt good fitness-wise today."
[caption id="attachment_32579" align="alignright"
width="199"] Zach Bell - Photo: Simon
Cudby[/caption]
However, fellow 250 rider Zach Bell's day
didn't go quite as initially expected when an early qualifying
crash hindered his performance during both motos. After having to
pull in early during the first moto, scoring a 38th-place finish,
Bell rebounded to 12th in the second moto and 16th overall.
"The day started off good for us," Bell said. "In the first
qualifying session I was second-fastest, but in the second session
I crashed and hurt my shoulder pretty badly. I still went out in
the first moto and was running in the top 10 for a while, but it
was so bad to hang on to with my shoulder that I decided to pull
off and just call it so I wouldn't hurt myself more.
"In the second moto I had to start out on the outside and almost
got the holeshot. I was running in the top five for almost 20
minutes, but I started getting tired with my shoulder injury. It
was getting hard to hang on to again, so I let a few people get by
me so I could just finish the race."
The next stop for the GEICO Honda MX riders is the RedBud National,
next Saturday, in Buchanan, Mich.

James Stewart Fights Back At Muddy Creek
[caption id="attachment_32594" align="alignright"
width="300"] James Stewart[/caption]
For Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing's James
Stewart, round five of the 2014 AMA Pro Motocross Championships
was fraught. The Yoshimura Suzuki rider got caught up in not one,
but two turn-one pile-ups, but rebounded on his Suzuki RM-Z450 in both
motos and salvaged a hard-fought eighth-place overall at Muddy
Creek Raceway.
Stewart came into the Tennessee National having swept the previous
round with both moto wins and the overall victory. His hopes for
this race were high, but unfortunately, he suffered an alarming
amount of bad luck in both motos. In the first, he was collected up
in a turn-one melee but still persevered and worked his way back to
fifth from almost last. Then the second moto started similarly,
with Stewart going down with a group in the first turn and having
to come from the back of the field. Still, he rode fearlessly and
had raced through to ninth when he went down again in the ruts.
Even so, the championship-winning rider pushed ahead and finished
11th in the moto and eighth for the day.
"Today was fun," said Stewart after the race. "The results weren't
that cool but I had fun today and want to thank the fans; they were
awesome out there. Another good thing is that we've been working on
the Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 and getting really good. I think we
only made a couple of clicker changes all day and I had some really
good speed. I felt like if I hadn't gone down on the starts, I
would have been out there and had a chance to win the races. So my
confidence is still there. I actually think I rode better today
than I did when I won at High Point two weeks ago. So now, we'll go
back and rest-up and get ready to make something happen at
RedBud."
Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing's next race is round six of the
2014 AMA Pro Motocross Championships on Saturday, July 5th at the
RedBud National in Buchanan.

JGRMX Muddy Creek Results
- Josh Grant #33 - 9th Place (11 / 6)
- Justin Brayton #10 - 10th Place (8 / 15)
- Phillip Nicoletti #38 16th Place (17 / 13)
Muddy Creek Raceway in Blountville, Tenn. was host to round five of
the 2014 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Series. Muddy
Creek is a new venue for the series in only its second year as a
stop on the tour. MAVTV aired the first moto live, and the second
moto was broadcast live on NBC. The first motos are always streamed
live on promotocross.com and both motos from each round are
archived on promotocross.com.
Justin
Brayton returned from injury at Muddy Creek joining Josh Grant and
Phil
Nicoletti, making for a three rider effort. Grant debuted a new
helmet cam the series is
running and it recorded a big first turn crash that collected Grant
in the first moto. Grant had to adjust his fork guard and readjust
his thumb which had been briefly dislocated before getting under
way, he logged 40th place on lap one. Meanwhile, Nicoletti and
Brayton had been able to avoid the first turn carnage and were
sixth and seventh after the first lap, respectively. Grant mounted
an inspiring charge and was able to pass most of the field and
finish in 11th place. Brayton was eighth. Nicoletti appeared to
have a sixth place finish on lock but with half a lap to go an
incident with a lapped rider caused him to go down; relegating him
to 17th.
Grant was checked out by the Asterisk Mobil Medical Unit and
cleared to race the second moto. All three riders were in the
top-10 at the start of moto two with Nicoletti fifth, Grant sixth,
and Brayton 10th. Grant advanced to fith by the second lap and
maintained the position until the last lap, where he gave up one
spot to finish sixth. Brayton was 15th, and Nicoletti 13th. Grant's
11 - six moto scores earned him ninth overall, Brayton's eight - 15
finishes equated to 10th for the day, and Nicoletti's 17 - 13
results were good for 16th.
The next race in the series also marking the halfway point on the
tour will be on July 5 at Red Bud Track and Trail in Buchanan,
Mich. MAVTV will broadcast the first moto live at 1:00 p.m. (EST)
and the second moto will air live on NBC at 3:00 p.m. (EST). The
first moto will also stream live on promotocross.com.

Blake Baggett Keeps The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki Team On The Podium At Muddy Creek

In the heat and humidity of Eastern Tennessee, Monster Energy/Pro
Circuit/Kawasaki's Blake
Baggett went 1-3 in the 250 Class to earn his third straight
podium finish in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship at Muddy
Creek Raceway on Saturday. Baggett returned to the podium after a
thrilling Moto 1 win by just eight one-hundredths of a second and a
third-place finish in the second moto. Dean Wilson
returned to racing after an injury at the season opener finishing
ninth overall with a 14-7 result. Justin Hill
rode his Kawasaki KX250F to
the front early in the first moto, but an injury to his right hand
forced him to miss the second moto and finish 15th overall. Monster
Energy Kawasaki's Brett
Metcalfe overcame a back injury during the week to earn seventh
overall with a 9-7 result.
Runner Up
Baggett has reached mid-season form in the last few races and his
trademark of finishing strong was never more applicable than in the
first moto at Muddy Creek. Baggett slowly worked his way towards
the front of the field and stalked the leader until the very last
corner where he launched his way to the moto win by just .080
seconds. In the second moto Baggett was running up front from the
beginning but throughout the moto he battled with lapped traffic.
As he tried to pass for the lead, he ultimately got caught out by a
lapper and went down, forcing him to settle for third. With his 1-3
result, Baggett gained 19 points in the championship standings.
"Today was a good day for me as far as points are concerned, but I
feel I could have gotten the win," said Baggett. "We have been
working hard and I think the hard work is showing during the race.
In the first moto I knew I had to go for it and I was pretty sure I
won the moto because I was ahead of Cooper. In the second moto we
were battling for most of the race, but late in the moto a lapper
stopped right in front of me and I had nowhere to go. I went down,
but I was still able to get back up to finish second."

Perseverance
Metcalfe came into the weekend doubtful he would be able to race
after injuring his back earlier in the week. With the injury, his
back locked up and he has been working since Wednesday to loosen it
up. In the first moto, the Australian was caught up in the first
turn pileup, but he was able to get going and move into the top
ten. In the second moto a better start saw Metty running solidly in
the top ten the entire moto.
"The race went well," said Metcalfe. "The Monster Energy Kawasaki
team did a great job setting up the bike and making adjustments
between motos. It has been a hard week with my back going out, but
I was able to gut through it and when I was racing I didn't really
feel any pain, but in the middle of the motos it really started to
tighten up. I'm looking forward to healing more this week and
heading into RedBud at 100 percent."

Welcome Back
After a gnarly cut to the back of his knee at Glen Helen, Wilson
returned to racing at Muddy Creek looking to regain his
championship form. Wilson was caught up in a first turn crash in
the opening moto and slowly plodded his way through the field to
score a 14th place result. In the second moto, Wilson was able to
avoid trouble in Turn One and rode strong in the top 10 to finish
seventh in the moto and earn ninth overall
"I was disappointed to go down in the first moto," said Wilson. "I
wanted to get back into the rhythm of racing and unfortunately I
had to do that while fighting my way through the pack. The second
moto went much better since I was in a battle the whole time. I'm
going to keep working to get a win this season."

Marvin Musquin Finishes Fifth At Muddy Creek National

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Marvin
Musquin had an impressive ride earning two 5th place finishes
to earn 5th overall at the fifth round of the Lucas Oil Pro
Motocross Championship Series held at Muddy Creek Raceway.
Marvin Musquin had to fight for his 5th place result in moto one
when he got off to a poor start. He clocked in on the first lap in
15th place and steadily worked his way up through the pack. By the
halfway point he had climbed into 7th place and began setting his
sights on the next two riders. The next lap he was able to get
around Cole Seely and Justin Hill to take 5th place. On his KTM 250
SX-F he pulled ahead of them and maintained that spot through the
checkered flag.
In the second moto Musquin got off to a much better start and
crossed the first lap in 6th place. On the third lap he moved into
5th position. He maintained that position for the remainder of the
moto while also closing the gap to 4th place. His 5-5 moto results
earned him 5th overall for the day. Now five rounds into the
series, Musquin sits 6th overall in the point standings. Fellow KTM
rider Jason
Anderson finished with a 9-35 result and is 7th overall.

Team TLD / Lucas Oil / Honda Tackles Tennessee
[caption id="attachment_32593" align="alignright"
width="300"] Malcolm Stewart - Photo: Simon
Cudby[/caption]
The Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda riders came into Muddy
Creek ready to shake things up. They were met with muggy conditions
and a track that was as technical and tricky as anything they will
see all year. The ruts were deep, sticky and treacherous, and they
claimed riders all day long. The team is still flying in
missing-man formation as they wait for Shane
McElrath to return from injury. His back is healing and it will
be a very short time until we see Shane under the tent and suited
up once again.
In the 450 class, Malcolm
Stewart's day started off on the wrong foot. A first turn
pileup claimed Malcolm and a slew of other top riders. He got going
quickly only to crash into the back of another rider three laps
later and fall further behind. Stewart persevered and would post a
14th place finish in moto one to at least salvage some points. The
second moto went much better; at least he didn't hit the ground.
But the Muddy Creek ruts and bump made it difficult for Malcolm to
find his rhythm and he just couldn't seem to find the pace he
needed to get to the front. He still made some headway and would be
10th at the end of the moto for 11th overall on the day.
[caption id="attachment_32581" align="alignleft"
width="300"] Cole Seely - Photo: Simon
Cudby[/caption]
The 250 class roared up the start hill and TLD riders Jessy Nelson
and Cole Seely were
sitting in 10th and 12th positions, respectively. Cole picked his
way through the Tennessee ruts and moved all the way to 6th at the
moto's end. His teammate, Nelson, would follow the team captain in
for 7th. The next moto, both riders were once again just outside
the top ten off the start and they both moved forward. Cole would
push his way to 8th while Jessy would finish 10th. Seely and Nelson
finished 6th and 8th overall at Muddy Creek, a solid result at a
very difficult venue.
As the series nears the halfway mark, the Troy Lee Designs / Lucas
Oil / Honda team is poised to make a push to the front. Seely and
Nelson are both one good start away from a podium finish, Malcolm
is in the same boat on the 450 and McElrath is ready to join the
fray soon. As the tour hits Red Bud this weekend in Michigan, be
sure to cheer for the TLD boys.
