Kurt Caselli Takes Detour During Race To Help Fellow Rider
When fans attend a motorsports event, they're probably
expecting to see action-packed races, tight competition and maybe
even a photo finish. Spectators at the opening round of the 2013
AMA National Hare & Hound Series got to witness something rare when
Kurt Caselli
momentarily took himself out of the race - for a good cause.
The KTM rider started the race normally enough, winning the
holeshot at the start and keeping up with the front pack of
motorcyclists for the first portion. In the middle of his second
loop, however, Caselli spotted a fallen comrade on the trail and
decided to take a detour to help. According to Ultimate
Motorcycling, the unnamed rider had suffered from a broken leg
following the crash and hadn't been seen by anyone until Caselli
came along. He then loaded the injured competitor on the back of
his bike and brought him to medics.
"I felt like it was the right thing to do," said Caselli. "I
definitely wanted to finish the race and earn as many points as I
could toward the championship, but I did not want to leave a fellow
rider on the trail without help."
Caselli may have dropped from podium contention with the decision,
but it was certainly one that made an impression on fans. He'll
return to action at the Hare & Hound on February 9 and 10 in
Ridgecrest, California.
