MXGP Returns to Glen Helen

MXGP returns to Glen Helen
The FIM Motocross World Championship, also known as the MXGP is returning to Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, this weekend, and the track is thankful that it's getting a bit more time to prepare this year.

Last year, a track change-up at the last minute meant that Glen Helen was notified of the MXGP's arrival just six weeks in advance. Tracks typically take far longer to prepare when a world motorcross event is on the way, but Glen Helen had no choice but try to get the track ready in time. In addition, the track had little time to advertise the event and really get a full turnout like they wanted.

"The attendance was approximately 50 percent, but it was quality attendance and people will tell their friends that this was a building block," Glen Helen owner Bud Friedkamp told Cycle News in May of last year. "Glen Helen is a long-term player, we are not a one-race track."

Friedkamp says that the track has undergone some changes this year to make it a bit more challenging for riders. With the raceway completely prepped this time around, the attention now turns to which riders will be participating. Of course, the big stars of MXGP will all be there, but the fact that the race is at Glen Helen and just one week before the AMA Pro Motocross series gets underway means some American riders might be looking to get some track time in. Cycle News speculates that recent AMA Supercross champion Ryan Villopoto is a likely entry, as he and the track share the same sponsor (Monster Energy).
