AMA Announces 2011 AMA Racing West Hare Scrambles Championship Series Schedule

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) announced today the 2011 schedule for some of the most exciting off-road motorcycle racing in the western United States: the AMA Racing West Hare Scrambles Championship Series.

The series awards AMA No. 1 plates across a range of age, skill and displacement classes to some of the country's fastest woods racers.

"This is a thrilling series for our youth and adult amateur hare scrambles racers," said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. "Along with our counterpart series in the East, this AMA championship includes courses that range from tight woods to open desert."

Bromley added that unlike a series with a national scope, the regional nature of the East and West Hare Scrambles Championships makes them easier for racers to follow all season.

"Racers only have to travel to races in their region," Bromley said. "This is much less demanding on their racing budget, but it still provides a diverse selection of terrain and gives our competitors the flavor of competing in a major series."

Hare scrambles are conducted on long, marked-loop courses through woods or desert and over rugged natural terrain. Events feature a designated number of laps or time limit, typically two hours. Competitive riders not only need to be fast, but also physically fit to maintain a race pace for hours.

The youth series runs in conjunction with the adult program. Youth classes typically run on Saturdays, and adult classes run on Sundays, though there may be exceptions.

The initial round of the 2010 AMA Racing West Hare Scrambles Championship Series kicks off Jan. 1 at the Arizona Cycle Park in Buckeye, Ariz. The series will then travel through California and Oregon before the season finale at the Big Sky Resort in Big Sky, Mont.
