AMA revises rules for 2011 Supersport season

The American Motorcycle Association has announced a rules update that will bring some changes to its 600cc Supersport class, which will race its third season in 2011.

Previously, the series featured a "Top Gun" and "Young Gun" division for racers aged 16-21, with the winner of the Top Gun division claiming the overall championship.

Next season, a number of changes will be brought to the series. The system will still operate with two divisions, but they will be considered equal and there will be a number of interdivisional races throughout the year. Each division will crown a champion, but the rider with the most points from either division will still be the overall champion.

There will also be no age limit - any rider can join either division. However, AMA will award a special "Young Gun" prize to the 16-21 rider who finishes with the most points

"We felt these changes were necessary to more clearly define the overall SuperSport Champion," said AMA Pro Chief Operating Officer David Atlas, "As with our other championships, the rider with the most points wins the coveted number one plate and we wanted to bring the same degree of clarity and recognition to the exciting SuperSport class, while also still acknowledging the accomplishments of the best young rider with a special year end award."
